Is GKS Closed? Read this latest update of GKS Termination 2024
According to a notice published by studyinkorea.gr.kr, the NIIED announced that the GKS is closed from 2024.
Applications of self-funded international students will no longer be accepted from 2024, since GKS is closed from December 2023.
What is GKS and what did it cover?
Global Korea Scholarship, also known as the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP). The program is offered by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), which is under the Ministry of Education in South Korea.
The Global Korea Scholarship aims to provide international students with opportunities to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies in South Korea. The scholarship typically covers the following expenses:
- Tuition Fees: The scholarship often covers the full tuition fees for the selected degree program.
- Monthly Stipend: Recipients of the GKS scholarship usually receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses, including accommodation, meals, and other personal expenses.
- Round-trip Airfare: The scholarship may provide a round-trip airfare for students to travel to and from their home country to South Korea at the beginning and end of their studies.
- Korean Language Training: Many GKS recipients are required to undergo a Korean language training program to enhance their language proficiency, and this is typically covered by the scholarship.
- Medical Insurance: Health insurance is often included to cover medical expenses during the scholarship period.
Why was the GKS program closed for 2024?
According to the official website of studyinkorea.gr.kr, the reason behind termination of GKS is stated as “reorganization”. However, we are currently waiting for more details.
